Short answer: Active UK motor insurance provides the legal minimum third-party cover when you drive in the Republic of Ireland. You normally do not need a Green Card. Some insurers also exempt Ireland from their foreign-use day caps.

Which insurers publish an Ireland exception?

The AA says Ireland lies within its territorial limits, and policyholders retain their UK cover level there throughout the year. LV= explicitly says its 180-day foreign-use limit does not apply to the Republic of Ireland. Allianz Online’s policy wording likewise excludes Ireland from its published European day limits. These are insurer-specific exceptions, not a rule to apply to every UK policy.

What about Saga, Admiral or other UK insurers?

Do not assume that “EU cover” means Ireland is exempt from annual limits. Saga’s December 2025 wording gives 90 days for Standard, 180 days for Select and no limit for Plus across listed destinations that include Ireland. Admiral advertises up to 90 days of European cover per policy term for its eligible comprehensive tiers, excluding Essential. Your own issued booklet may set further restrictions.

Green Card and documents

GOV.UK lists Ireland among countries where UK drivers do not normally need a Green Card. Take your insurance certificate, your driving licence and appropriate vehicle-registration documents. If towing a trailer, using a company vehicle or travelling through other countries, check the relevant separate rules.

Check Northern Ireland versus the Republic of Ireland

Northern Ireland is part of the UK, while the Republic of Ireland is a separate country and EU member state. Insurers can use distinct definitions of “territorial limits,” so select the right destination in your policy documents rather than relying on the word “Ireland” alone.

Only the actual schedule and certificate can establish your own cover. A published allowance is not a guarantee of claim acceptance.
