BorderCover Atlas is an independent informational comparison tool for people driving a vehicle they own across a national border. It compares published wording, not policyholder credentials or claims decisions.

How an answer is produced

  1. Identify your issuing market. UK, Ireland, USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand have distinct starting rules.
  2. Match an identifiable insurer and product. Only named tiers with cited evidence are awarded the corresponding published benefits.
  3. Check the precise territory. The app does not assume that “Europe” includes every possible European or neighbouring country.
  4. Apply the correct day-counting method. Annual totals include previously used days; per-trip limits apply to the individual journey. Unknown counting methods are disclosed.
  5. Separate cover from paperwork. Third-party legal minimum, own-car damage, Green Card evidence, locally issued liability and breakdown assistance are different questions.

Our evidence standard

Primary sources are government/regulator guidance, an insurer’s official website, current policy booklets and product disclosure statements. A source is recorded with a URL and the date it was consulted. A checked date describes a research check, not continuous monitoring, and it is not a representation that a personal policy has been authenticated.

Some old FAQs conflict with newer policy booklets. We prioritise the newer, product-specific booklet where the conflict is clear, and we preserve a warning to check the edition. We do not publish invented prices, star ratings, coverage percentages or guarantee labels.

What the statuses mean

  • Extended: the published source describes the insured level travelling to that destination, within the shown limit. Personal exclusions may still apply.
  • Minimum: legal third-party protection is the only published or statutory baseline identified, not own-car comprehensive cover.
  • Liability: bodily injury/property damage liability is verified, but other benefits are not.
  • Over limit: the selected trip exceeds a documented enhanced-cover allowance; contact the insurer.
  • Not covered: the source expressly excludes the ordinary domestic motor policy abroad or requires a separate locally issued policy.
  • Verify: insurer or country data is insufficient for a safe claim. We do not infer coverage.

Coverage and limitations

The initial comparison includes six issuing markets, 16 named insurers and 57 destination choices. This is a selective verified dataset, not a claim to include every insurer, policy edition, country law or endorsement. Not every insurer has verified cover in every destination.

We currently do not ask for or verify your insurance certificate, vehicle registration, trip permits, residency or underwriting information. Not designed for rentals, leases without permission, trailers, business use, permanent imports or claims advice. The website does not use a live insurer API and is not continuously updated.

Update and correction protocol

The dataset is readable in /data/policies.json and the website bundles its source links. Before publishing a new version, verify changes against the latest official source, update the affected record, re-run the test suite and deploy a new ZIP. No automatic cover changes should be inferred from the passage of time.

Commercial independence

At launch this website does not sell insurance, collect leads, charge fees or contain affiliate tracking links. If partnerships are added later, they should be labelled and kept separate from evidence and cover conclusions.
