Short answer: AMI’s cited November 2024 policy wording states that it does not cover incidents outside New Zealand. A car shipped to Australia needs its own transport and road-insurance arrangements.

Read the geographic exclusion

The AMI car policy’s exclusions section explicitly rules out incidents outside New Zealand. This applies across the cited cover levels; a comprehensive label does not cancel a geographic exclusion. Always check the wording edition on your own schedule and any special endorsement.

Australia has a different insurance system

Australian compulsory third-party bodily-injury schemes differ by state and territory, and they are not equivalent to comprehensive property damage cover. Vehicle registration, temporary importation, licensing and local liability requirements all matter. Arrange an insurer-issued, destination-valid policy before using the car on Australian roads.

What about the voyage?

Shipping, transit and storage may need marine cargo or another specifically agreed policy. Ask for written confirmation of cover from pickup through unloading and subsequent legal road use.
